A Light In The Dark by Andy Keener is a collection of twelve horror stories by eleven authors that, as Keener suggests, will have you sleeping with the light on. This baker’s dozen is reminiscent of the Twilight Zone in providing us with a memorable variety of spooky stories, ranging from the Cat from Hell in Jenn Skinner’s The Guardian to the victims of the darkness in Paul Scheible’s short story for which the anthology is named. The protagonists in Dennis Trinh’s Hunt come face to face with a modern-day werewolf, and the residents of an old folks’ home play the video game from Hell in Tomm Hulett’s Not What It Used To Be. We also have two selections from Bryce Wilson, featuring the demonic vehicle in Critical Mass and the genocidal killing spree of Culture War.
Andy Keener’s Visiting Hour features a nameless patient on Dr. Charleston’s shift who finds himself in a nightmarish hospital ward from which there seems to be no escape other than a fate worse than death. The patient finds himself in what appears to be a carnival funhouse whose inhabitants are demonic creatures and only two other inmates besides himself. One is a dead woman victimized by the monsters and the other a girl of about eight years old who appears to hold the secret to the hallucinatory chambers of horror. The author displays a Kafkaesque flair for the macabre as we find the patient to be a victim of forces beyond his control, condemned to a situation in which there is no resolution. Keener leaves us in the midst of a conundrum, allowing us to sift through the allegories as we, like Dr. Charleston, approach a hellish situation which has no beginning and may never have an end.
The other stories in the anthology are equally as diverse and compelling. Jo and her friends may be dealing with a vampire in Alex Scott’s Jo, the Bat, and the Cat, while Clement comes to a sordid end to his knight quest in Colin Bridges’ Hour of Cochineal. We are treated to a surreal and libidinous romp with the animals in Alexis Long’s Fox of my Dreams, while Mark is dealing with customers from hell in David Hollowell’s Gas. Bog Butter by Roz Tessa brings us to the end of the vignettes as Anna Mauer finds herself dealing with the extraterrestrial weirdness of New Eire.
There’s something in here for everyone, and bios of each author are included at the end of the book that may help you relate to the writer whose story you liked best. You may have trouble deciding, because A Light In The Dark by Andy Keener will be many a horror fan’s multi-faceted delight.
It's an entertaining read! A nice mix of styles, too. I look forward to the next collection by these authors!
